Saint Christopher of Lycia was a third-century martyr. Originally named Reprobus, the Roman authorities became aware of him when he converted a group of soldiers to Christ. He was baptized with the name Christopher, which means "Christ-bearer." This is why he is oftentimes depicted as literally carrying Christ. The saint was subjected to torture and martyred about the year 250.

Many miracles have been attributed to Saint Christopher's prayers, and his intercessions have been considered powerful for centuries. His feast is celebrated on May 9.
