4 x 5 inches

One of the first who Jesus called to be Apostles, St. Andrew was the brother of St. Peter and a fisherman by trade. He and Peter were fishing in the sea of Galilee when Jesus called them to become “fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19, Mark 1:17).

After the Ascension, St. Andrew ministered with Peter throughout the Mediterranean. Because he is a less prominent figure than Peter in the book of Acts, which covers that time, it seems that Andrew was a more retiring man than his brother. St. Andrew was martyred in Patras, a small town in Greece. He is commemorated on November 30.

In the icon, St. Andrew wears green, the color of the Holy Spirit as well as peace and tranquility, calmer than red. He too holds a scroll, and with his other hand makes a sign of the Trinity.
